Time

I left school yesterday and went straight to Oxford to collect Kitty who was abandoned by her elder sister in favour of a New Years party. Kitty is a chatterbox par excellence and kept my mother entertained for a week. my mother in return kept her fed and watered which if you knew Kitty is no mean feat. Absence meant kitty REALLY missed me and I have the card to prove it which I will laminate so she can not rip it up in her all too frequent moments of anger, I shall then wave it in front of her when she calls me the worst mother in the world (I have yet to have the heart to point out its a one horse race). It was lovely to be alone on the coach and then to arrive to a roast chicken dinner, I then slept in for the first time since I can remember as E or the wonderful Leyla always wakes me up early. Utter bliss. I however took 5 hours to come back drop her off at her dads then come home but... I have just watched the last 2 episodes of Sex and the City, An American in Paris (sublime) and I am now watching my Christmas present from my sister Julia, Muse Absolution tour DVD eating my mothers homemade Christmas cake, life does not get much better.
My mother retires this year and I have told her to spend it all, every last penny on living in style, she is worried she will be bored so I have suggested she writes a cookery book. My parents ran restaurant in York for many years, my sister Julia who still lives in York says that people still talk about it. It was years ahead of its time and its demise was caused by a mixture of my fathers incompetence and the greed of the landlords. Now it is so easy to publish a book via blurb I think it will give her some thing to look forward to s she is not looking forward to retiring.

Tristen Adelen

A photo of his stand at the exhibition

http://www.les-ds.blogspot.com/ One of my favourites from the exhibition check out the blog for a lot of beautiful textured work

D'Anchois

A catalogue inside a tin how brilliant is that. This exhibition was on at Al'Espace Entertainment des Blancs Manteaux of December 22, 2006 to January 7, 2007. http://www.pourinfos.org We went inside to get warm but the work was fantastic and I came away with some great new names to research.

Penelope Davis

penelope davis
Penelope Davis employs the ‘cameraless’ technique of the photogram to explore the literal and indexical qualities that are popularly assumed between the photograph and the world. Her works play with photography’s conventions to produce images that are recognisable as photographic but which make the processes of their creation and the origins of their subject matter mysterious. In this way simple assumptions of objectivity, reality and literal depiction are rendered complex.
The objects used in her photograms provide a pivot for issues of commodification, signage and fabrication. Transparent Japanese tissue packets, and other objects moulded and cast in resin such as antique cameras and columns of book spines, are exposed directly onto photographic paper. This slow work results in colour saturated images emphasising the nature of photography as a medium of light and time. Davis’ smaller, ‘traditional’ photographs offer glimpses of the transitional in-between spaces of cluttered urban environments, exploring the metamorphoses that occur between nature and culture, between image and text and between the photograph and its source.

I think these photograms are just so beautiful

Antonio Murado

Effie Paleologou

I have been reading London Orbital by Iain Sinclair It was a tough start as it is a book that demands your full attention. It is very much in the mould of the great W G Sebald Rings of Saturn http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,6109,619971,00.html which is a kind of road trip with wonderful random tangents, a book that you don't want to finish. I love road trip books like this. Tim Moore wrote a brilliant one based on the Monopoly Board game. London Orbital is just that, an attempt to walk as close to the M25 as possible whilst documenting the history of the places visited. The book is littered with wonderful allusions and one of the many people mentioned was the photographer Effie Paleologou whose photos give a real sense of atmosphere. Stuck in my in tray was the work of Antonio Murado whose work is similarly atmospheric both I think have struck a chord after all my travelling, it has felt very strange to stop and become so static I can see how some people just keep on going.
Whilst I was editing photos on holiday I would make brief notes which I posted last night, unusually for me I typed them into word so that I could do a straight copy+paste into the blog, normally I hand write and carefully dispose of the notes. Of course Emin found the notes and ranted that It was unacceptable to write anything that concerned him especially negative and that I should tell him to his face if I am unhappy.Of course he saw the remarks out of context which was the illogical ranting of a spoilt brat, but it does raise the question as to weather I should mention him at all. When I caught up with the blogs of others I realise no one else moans about their partner, instead they focus on the positive or the thematic. I have written about him when I feel his behaviour impacts on my mental and therefore artistic well being, a concept he is unable to comprehend. Emins world is totally black and white no ambiguities no theorising just the facts, I do not know how we stay together other than to bring up Leyla, yet our relationship is far more complex. It is bizarre to think that if he were to find this blog it would finish the relationship because he hates the fact that I write without telling him first and he hates secrets. So I shall attempt to stop with the "Liz Jones" style diatribes and focus on the more positive aspects of my life. Kitty did ask what my New Years resolution was and I guess that will be it (oh and loose some bloody weight)
